Abstract: (15227 Views)
In this work, the propagation characteristics of Gaussian laser beam in upward plasma-density ramp are investigated by considering the ponderomotive and relativistic nonlinearities. The thermal self-focusing and defocusing of a laser beam are studied in ambipolar diffusion regime and in the 10-160 keV electron temperature interval. The second-order differential equation of dimensionless beam width parameter is solved numerically, taking into account the effect of plasma- density ramp. Our results show that the self-focusing temperature interval will be wider by using the upward plasma-density ramp and higher slope value of density-ramp results in wider temperature interval. In addition, the results represent that the plasma density-ramp cannot influence on the existence of a “turning point temperature” and its numerical value in comparison to homogeneous plasma density.
Keywords: Thermal self-focusing, weakly relativistic plasma, ponderomotive force, plasma-density ramp
