We theoretically study the transmission characteristics of 3 × 3 optical coupler including a waveguide and two ring resonators using coupled mode theory. Our analytical approach is suitable for either linearly distributed couplers or circularly symmetric distributed coupler. Effect of coupling strength on the transmittance of a 3×3 coupler is investigated in detail. Based on optical transfer function of a 3×3 coupler, we show that the optical transmittance versus wavelength can be calibrated based on the coupling strengths of side couplers.
