Abstract-In this article, it is shown that one can simply measure the topological charge of the optical vortex generated by means of a spiral square zone plate. To this end, the element is tilted with respect to the incident beam. The tilt causes the cylindrical symmetry of the system removed which is because of imposing an astigmatism on the system. As a result, interference fringes are formed at the focal plane. It is demonstrated that the number of the fringes is directly related to the strength of the charge. Finally, it is shown that the corresponding experimental results are in good agreement with the simulated predictions.
