Abstract: (878 Views)
One of important sources for terahertz radiation is quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) with plasmonic cavities. The output characteristics of a QCL can be described by three-level rate equations. By solving these equations, we obtain the time evolution of population inversion and the number of photons. In this paper, we examine the effect of injection current on the population inversion and the number of photons, and we will see that applying current up to 2.5 A increases the population inversion and reaches the peak, and then the population inversion decreases. Also, using the relationship between the output power and the number of photons, we plot the P-I diagram for terahertz quantum cascade lasers based on two types of structures (fixed-pitch grating and chirped grating) and we observe that the threshold current and slop efficiency for these two structures are totally different.
