Abstract: (1511 Views)
In this paper, light propagation (He-Ne laser and a simple lamp) within periodic flames of Butane-Propane gas or natural gas (methane) is investigated experimentally. Periodic temperature distribution induced by combustion leads to a periodical refractive index in the burning gas. This periodic optical medium behaves like an electromagnetic waveguide and conducts the light to the upstream screen through layers that have total internal reflection condition. Experimental observation shows that refractive index in the center of Butane-Propane gas is slightly higher than that of air, but in the methane, refractive index of the flame core is lower than air. By this experiment, the refractive index of burning gasses can be found easily with high precision.
