Optical polarizers with high extinction ratio over a wide wavelength rang are required for on-chip optical circuits and integrated optics. Controlling the polarization state is an important issue in various application such as spectroscopy, photolithography or ellipsometry. One kind of the polarizers is wire grid polarizer (WGP) that can be easily integrated with the other nano-optic devices. In this paper, a wire grid polarizer with high extinction ratio over a wide wavelength range, is presented. The proposed structure consists of an array of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) grating on silica substrate in which graphene layers sandwiched between metal and insulator layers. The influences of different metal materials and the number of graphene layers have been investigated with finite difference time domain (FDTD) analyzer. The results show the significant improving of the extinction ratio by using aluminum as metal and 3 graphene layers that has been increased to 158dB at 2400nm wavelength due to the formation of surface plasmon polaritons. Therefore, the proposed structure exhibits an improvement of 62% in compared to that of the other existing WGPs.
