Investigation of The Formation of Microporose and Microwave Structures on the PMMA Polymer Surface Following CO2 Pulsed Laser Irradiation

Microfluidics chips have gained important applications in many areas of the research, such as chemical synthesis, bio and optofluidic technologies. Among the various polymeric materials used for fabrication of the microfluidic devices, Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is mostly used because of its low cost, transparency and biocompatibility which is important, especially for the biological applications. laser micromachining is one of the most important manufacturing methods used for fabrication of the microchannels. Following laser micromachining different micro and nano structures arrays may appear on the bottom of the microchannel depended on the irradiation parameters. Formation of these structures affects the total throughput of the microchannels. In this article, the formation of microporose  and microwave structures on the surface of PMMA polymer following pulsed CO2 laser irradiation  is studied.  Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for the investigation of the surface morphology before and after irradiation.
