Abstract – For fiber optic surface plasmon resonance sensor it is necessary to remove a short part of its cladding to coat a thin layer of a metal. In optical fibers with small core diameters, this region is too small and removing is difficult. In this paper, a new method using drops of the HF acid for small taper fabrication is reported. By this method for a multi-mode optical fiber (core/cladding- 50/125 µm) a smooth taper with 40 µm diameter and 2 mm length is fabricated. Roughness of the surface obtained by atomic force microscopy images of an area of narrow fiber is about 8 nm.
